This month Last Call will feature music from Club d'Elf. From Boston, this acclaimed group of adventuresome musicians has released "You Never Know". Led by founder and bassist Mike Rivard, the new release is inspired in part by the aftereffects of a near death experience the bandleader had, while seeking spiritual insight in the Amazonian rain forest.
Club d'Elf presents a 75 minute, ten track album that truly draws the listener in. It's a trance heavy album with an intoxicating Moroccan groove. Highlights include a respectful presentation of Joe Zawinul and Miles Davis' "In A Silent Way"/ "It's About That Time", followed by Rivard's "Dark Fish", plus a knockout cover of Frank Zappa's "King Kong." These and other selections on the disc are truly hypnotic jam songs that are in the spirit of the Miles Davis recordings of the late 1960s.
Rivard and his veteran band mates are joined by special guest keyboardist John Medeski and guitarist David Fiuczynski, among other luminaries. The result is one of the finest adventuresome jazz recordings of 2022. For more information you may visit clubdelf.com
We also have an NPR review of the final concert recording from legendary saxophonist Albert Ayler, an extensive appreciation of Flora Purim and her final release, plus a remembrance of bassist Charnett Moffett who died earlier this year.
The Last Call comes your way 9-11pm Saturdays on KIOS-FM and streaming to where you are via this website.
Thanks for listening!
