DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Supreme Court has issued orders changing how the state court system conducts security assessments after two cybersecurity workers hired by state court administrators were arrested for breaking into the Dallas County Courthouse last month.

Chief Justice Mark Cady signed an order Thursday that prohibits physical break-ins of courthouses and entry outside of regular business hours as part of cybersecurity testing. Court administrators also must confer with local officials on systems testing.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A man who spent more than 25 years in prison for an Iowa murder that he didn't commit is urging college students to help inmates who may be innocent.

Terry Harrington spoke to Coe College students Tuesday, recounting how he was wrongly convicted in the 1977 shooting death of a Council Bluffs security guard when he was a teenager.

Harrington had exhausted his appeals and was serving a life sentence at the Iowa State Penitentiary when he met a prison barber who believed in his innocence.

(Omaha, NE)  --  Omaha police are looking for two people who robbed a Kum and Go just after midnight.  Police say two men walked into the store near 120th and Blondo armed with a gun and stole money.  It's unclear where the suspects went after the robbery.

(Lincoln, NE)  --  A vandalism charge is being dropped against a University of Nebraska-Lincoln researcher.  Thirty-nine-year-old Patricia Wonch Hill appeared in Lancaster County Court where one of her two charges was dismissed yesterday.  The Omaha World Herald reports Hill is accused of defacing Nebraska First District Congressman Jeff Fortenberry's campaign signs by placing "googly eyes" on them, and placing stickers on Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer's office in Lincoln.  The charge concerning the Fortenberry signs was dropped because the Republican congressman declined to show up for the

Two Arrested For Courthouse Break-Ins Had Clearance

(Dallas Co., IA)  --  Two men arrested for breaking into the Dallas and Polk County courthouses really were hired to do it.  A contract with the security company the men work for actually says they can pick door locks and break in to do security testing day or night.  The Iowa Court Administration has since issued a statement apologizing.  The men are still facing burglary charges in Dallas County.

Mayor Addresses Convicted Councilman

(Omaha, NE)  --  Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert is speaking out about a convicted member of the city council.  Stothert released a statement yesterday saying she can do nothing about Council Vinny Palermo.  The mayor says the city charter states that a councilman can be removed from office if they are convicted of a felony, but Palermo was convicted of misdemeanors.  Palermo pleaded guilty earlier this week to not filing his taxes from 2012 to 2014, and he has vowed to remain in office. 

Iowa 20th-Worst State For Burglaries

(Undated, IA)  --  Iowa is the 20th-worst state in the country for burglaries.  According to a study by Safe-Home-dot-org that uses FBI data, Iowa had a little over seven burglaries per one-thousand homes in 2017.  Neighboring Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, and Minnesota all had less.  The data also shows the rate of burglaries across the country has fallen to 15 percent of all crimes committed.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha principal accused of not immediately reporting a teacher's suspected sexual abuse of three students has quit his job.

The Omaha World-Herald reports that the Omaha school board voted Monday night to end the pay and benefits on July 31 for 49-year-old Eric Nelson, who'd been principal at Fontenelle Elementary School. One of his teachers, Greg Sedlacek, pleaded guilty May 6 to three counts of sexual assault of a child. Nelson was placed on leave after Sedlacek's arrest.

An Omaha Crime Stoppers tweet shows police a picture of the person who gave police the slip in an early morning chase.  Investigators are trying to attach a name to the picture.  

A Carter Lake Police sergeant escaped injury in the Thursday morning incident but his cruiser was rammed.  It all began about 4:20 a.m. when Carter Lake Police checked on a suspicious vehicle in a hotel parking lot. The sergeant found a man who was passed out.

Two men, one dressed as Batman and the other in an all green costume robbed the Casey's located at 24th St and 23rd Ave in Council Bluffs.

The robbery happened at 3:54 AM. The men entered the store armed with a rifle and a sword. They gave the clerk a bag and he filled it with cash.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A man accused of shooting an officer during a traffic stop before being shot himself by other officers has been released from a hospital and booked into jail.

Omaha police say 36-year-old John Ezell Jr. was booked Wednesday into the Douglas County jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assaulting an officer and weapons counts.

(Lincoln, NE)  --  Lincoln police are investigating after a pizza delivery driver fended off a robber.  Authorities say the victim was making a delivery to an apartment in the 16-hundred block of 20th Street when the incident took place early Sunday morning.  A possibly-armed man charged at the delivery driver, who was walking back to his vehicle, and ordered him to hand over his money.  The victim grabbed an empty pizza bag, and threw it at the robber, who fled empty-handed.
