A flu vaccine clinic is opening in Omaha.  The Visiting Nurse Association's clinic at 12565 West Center will offer the standard flu vaccine and FluMist for anyone between the ages of two and 49.  The drive-through clinic will next be open on Monday, September 21st at 4:00 p.m.

Nebraska, Omaha, Highest Flu Activity In The Country

The flu is running rampant in eastern Nebraska.  According to the Walgreens Flu Index, the Omaha market covering eastern Nebraska and western Iowa has the highest flu activity in the country.  The index says Nebraska as a state also has the highest flu activity in the country.

The latest flu report shows Nebraska has high flu activity.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, Nebraska is the only state in the upper Midwest with high activity.  Neighboring Kansas, Iowa, and South Dakota all have minimal flu activity.  The CDC says the virus is present in 30 states including Puerto Rico and six kids have died from it this fall.


CDC Considers Flu Scattered In Nebraska

The flu is considered scattered across the state of Nebraska.  That's according to the Centers for Disease Control.  It says nearly 200 positive flu tests were reported in Nebraska between September 29th and November 2nd, more than six-times as many during that time last year.  So far, no deaths have been reported.


Health Department Encourages Flu Shots

(Omaha, NE)  --  The Douglas County Health Department is encouraging people to prepare for flu season by getting a flu shot.  Health department officials say nearly 38-hundred cases were reported in the county during the last flu season.  Douglas County residents are being urged to get vaccinated by the end of October.    

(Douglas County, NE)  --  The Douglas County Health Department is confirming more flu-related deaths.  Officials say three more adults have died of the flu, and seven adult flu-related deaths have been reported in Douglas County this season.  More than 300 flu cases were confirmed in Douglas County last week.   

(Des Moines, IA)  --  The flu is officially considered widespread across the State of Iowa.  According to the state Health Department, there have been more than 30 people across Iowa who have been hospitalized because of the flu this season.  It also says there have been three flu-related deaths.

(Omaha, NE)  --  The number of flu cases is in the rise in the Omaha area.  The Douglas County Health Department says there were 356 flu cases reported last week, which is up from the 209 cases reported two weeks ago.   The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says the flu virus is widespread across the state.

Dr. Marvin Bittner, Creighton University School of Medicine Associate Professor and Infectious Disease Specialist, says this week, which is National Influenza Vaccination Week, everyone over the age of 6 months should get their flu shot.
