The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles says a new scam is using unsolicited text messages from unknown phone numbers claiming to be the DMV.  The texts say the recipients owe, or are owed, large sums of money from the DMV, and directs them to click a link. The DMV says recipients shouldn't click the link, but if they do, messages should be deleted immediately. The department says it sometimes sends texts to residents with their permission, but would never send emails demanding or promising money.

The State DMV office in Omaha is no longer accepting walk-in appointments. The office at the County Treasurer's Office is canceling all test drive appointments and customers are being asked to call and reschedule their test at the Omaha or Bellevue office. Customers can still update their information and replace ID cards online.

The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles is warning residents of two phone scams targeting licensed Nebraska drivers. The first has callers claiming to represent Amazon or Apple warning that the targeted victim's account has been hacked. The caller then requests a photo of the front and back of the victim’s driver license to verify their identity, followed by a request for their bank information. The second phone scam is from a caller claiming to represent the FBI, who then requests a photo of the front and the back of the victim’s driver license followed by a demand for money.

Nebraska is the first state to publicly acknowledge it will share drivers’ license records with the U.S. Census Bureau as the federal agency tries to comply with President Donald Trump’s order to count the number of U.S. citizens.
