DMV Warns Of Text Scam

The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles says a new scam is using unsolicited text messages from unknown phone numbers claiming to be the DMV.  The texts say the recipients owe, or are owed, large sums of money from the DMV, and directs them to click a link. The DMV says recipients shouldn't click the link, but if they do, messages should be deleted immediately. The department says it sometimes sends texts to residents with their permission, but would never send emails demanding or promising money.

Better Business Bureau Warns Against Fearmongering Scams

The Better Business Bureau is warning against scammers preying on fear. Better Business Bureau Investigator Steve Baker said scammers will pretend to be the I-R-S and take victims' bank information to withdraw money from the accounts. The Omaha Regional President and CEO said scammers are also claiming to be the C-D-C. Those scammers tell victims they can give them access to CARES Act funding. Baker said government agencies won't call asking for your personal information.

The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles is warning residents of two phone scams targeting licensed Nebraska drivers. The first has callers claiming to represent Amazon or Apple warning that the targeted victim's account has been hacked. The caller then requests a photo of the front and back of the victim’s driver license to verify their identity, followed by a request for their bank information. The second phone scam is from a caller claiming to represent the FBI, who then requests a photo of the front and the back of the victim’s driver license followed by a demand for money.

Lincoln Police Warn Of Holiday Scams

Police in Lincoln are warning the public of holiday scammers after they say a man lost forty-eight-hundred dollars. The 76-year-old victim told police he received a call from someone who claimed to be a Microsoft employee who told him his account was overcharged. Authorities say the scammer convinced the victim to buy thousands of dollars' worth of gift cards and give the codes to them over the phone. Officials want the public to know that businesses will never call and ask for payment in gift cards.

 

DMV Warns Of Scam

(Omaha, NE) -- The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles is warning residents about a scam.  Officials say scammers claiming to work at the DMV are calling residents and telling them their driver's licenses have been recalled or will be cut off unless they make a payment.  DMV officials say they will never call residents to demand payment or threaten to recall a driver's license. 

 

Omaha Police Warn Of OPPD Phone Scam

(Omaha, NE)  --  Omaha police are warning residents about a scam phone call involving the Omaha Public Power District.  Police say scammers send out a call that looks like the utility's toll free number and demand people pay for overdue bills.  Police say scammers have also told people their automatic bill pay is messed up and if they don't pay their bills they'll lose service.  OPPD says they'll never ask for payment on a cold-call over the phone.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Department of Public Safety's Division of Criminal Investigation is warning of a phone scam targeting state residents.

(Sarpy Co., NE)  --  The Sarpy County sheriff's investigator is warning business managers in the area of a potential phone scam going around.  A donut shop manager and a coffee shop manager have both said they got a phone call recently from a number resembling their corporate office.  The person tried to convince them to take the money from their register and buy prepaid credit cards, put the money on them, and read the numbers back to them so they could withdraw it.  The donut shop claims it was scammed out of over one-thousand dollars.
