Sarpy County Board Votes To Remove Treasurer From Office

(Sarpy County, NE)  --  The Sarpy County Board of Commissioners is voting to remove the county treasurer from office.  Tuesday afternoon, the board voted 5-to-zero to remove Brian Zuger from office after they say he misappropriated funds for county school districts.  His removal is effective immediately. The Board has appointed an Interim Treasurer to serve until they find a replacement.

Data Center Dynamics

Facebook is again expanding a data center it is building in the Omaha suburbs. The social media giant said Wednesday that it will spend an additional $400 million to add another 1 million square feet to the data center that is partly operational southwest of Omaha in Sarpy County. The company estimates that it will spend nearly $1.5 billion total on the project that will now expand from Papillion into Springfield and include 3.6 million square feet. When the project is completed in 2024, Facebook said the data center will employ roughly 300 people.

Sarpy County Moves To Oust Treasurer

The Sarpy County Commission is moving forward with legal action to remove County Treasurer Brian Zuger from office.  The commission's vote comes after the Nebraska State Auditor released a report that identified numerous issues in the Sarpy County Treasurer's Office that impacted more than 12-point-five-million-dollars in public funds.  According to the report, some districts were either overpaid or underpaid in property tax disbursements.

Gov. Pete Ricketts is imploring residents to follow Nebraska’s voluntary coronavirus safety guidelines as the number of new cases and hospitalizations surge to record levels. He also suggests that the state could reimpose social distancing mandates that were lifted in September. His comments Thursday came as the state’s top public health official warned that Nebraska needs to reduce the number of cases to avoid overwhelming hospitals. Nebraska reported a record 1,828 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday.

Amazon says it plans to build a facility in Papillion that will eventually employ about 1,000 full-time workers. The company said the center is scheduled to open sometime next year. The 700,000-square-foot center will use workers and robot assistants to fulfill orders. David Brown, president and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, said an economic impact study estimated the center could have a more than $200 million annual economic impact on the region. Several other large companies, including Facebook, Google and Travelers Insurance, have built facilities in Sarpy County.

Sarpy County Voters Now Have More Opportunities To Vote

Sarpy County residents are getting more chances to vote early.  The Sarpy County Election Commission has added evening and weekend hours.  The election commission office at 501 Olson Drive in Papillion will now be open until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.  Early voting in Sarpy County will continue through November 2nd.

There are now more than 32-thousand COVID-19 cases in Nebraska.  As of yesterday, there had been 32-thousand-47 cases and 383 coronavirus-related deaths reported across the state since the start of the pandemic.  Douglas County has seen the most cases in the state with 12-thousand-715. Officials at Bellevue East High School announced a positive Covid case in their student body yesterday evening.  The case involves a senior student at the school, and school district officials and the Sarpy/Cass Health Department are conducting contact tracing.

Absentee Ballot Applications On The Way

Absentee ballot applications will start appearing around Omaha this week. Douglas County Election Commissioner Brian Kruse said the applications are on green, postcard size cardstock. He says voters need to fill out the application portion and return it in the official drop box, through the mail, or by email before the end of October. The only difference for Sarpy County residents is that the applications are printed on salmon-colored cardstock.

Nebraska’s three largest counties plan to send ballot request forms to every voter before this fall’s general election, but it’s not yet clear whether those forms will be sent statewide. Officials in Douglas, Sarpy and Lancaster counties say they are planning to send out the ballot-request forms because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and because it will help them plan for the election. Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen told The Omaha World-Herald he hasn’t decided whether to send out ballot request forms.

New Reservoir Named For Chief Of Omaha Tribe

A new flood mitigation reservoir in Nebraska is being named Big Elk Lake in honor of Chief Big Elk, a leader of the Omaha tribe. Directors of the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District Board announced the unanimous decision Thursday. The board says in a news release that Big Elk played an important role in Sarpy County history.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Nebraska is growing.  As of yesterday, there had been 15-thousand-634 cases and 188 deaths reported across the state since the start of the pandemic.  More than five-thousand coronavirus cases have been reported in Douglas County. Nebraska Coronavirus Total Tops 120

The number of coronavirus cases in Nebraska is growing.  The Douglas County Health Department confirmed nine new cases yesterday, while Sarpy and Cass counties reported two new cases. The city of Lincoln also confirmed two new cases on Sunday, and officials say they were travel-related. There have been 120 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nebraska and two deaths.

Nebraska Covid-19 Total Rises to 33

Four new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Nebraska yesterday. The Department of Health and Human Services says two cases are from Lincoln County, one is from Nemaha County, and the other is from Sarpy County. Officials say the patient from Sarpy County is currently hospitalized, while the other three are self-isolating. There are now 33 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nebraska.

Online retailer Hayneedle will lay off some 200 workers at its Omaha headquarters in the coming months. Hayneedle's parent company, Walmart, told the Omaha World-Herald on Thursday that about 100 local workers will remain employed and will be based at the Sarpy County call center. Those being laid off will get at least a 60-day notice and will be eligible to apply for other jobs within the Walmart organization. A written statement from Walmart says the layoffs follow a decision to integrate the Hayneedle business and select functions within Walmart.com.

Paradise Lake Fires Ruled Suspicious

A series of fires in a flood-damaged Sarpy County community are ruled suspicious in nature.  The fires broke out yesterday in the Paradise Lake community.  Two abandoned trailer homes in the community burned yesterday.  The trailers in Paradise Lake were deemed uninhabitable following this past spring's floods.  

*UPDATE: Bellevue officials say the fires are believed to be the work of vandals, and that tearing down the flood-damaged homes could cost 1.5 million dollars.

Sarpy County commissioners are cutting the county pay for their posts by $95 a year.
