Sexual Assault

Press-Citizen

A woman is suing a University of Iowa fraternity and two men after an alleged sexual assault that spawned protests on campus earlier this fall. The woman alleges in a lawsuit filed Tuesday that two members of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, also known as Fiji, sexually assaulted her at a party at the house in September 2020. She says the alleged assault was filmed and widely circulated. The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages against the two males and the fraternity. The two men were expelled from the fraternity, but no charges were filed.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has announced a 5-year ban on Phi Gamma Delta fraternity for student conduct code violations following a report of a sexual assault at the fraternity's house in August. The report led to a massive protest outside the fraternity house and sparked similar protests on college campuses around the country. The university said Tuesday in a news release that Phi Gamma Delta — better known as Fiji — is no longer recognized by the university and is suspended from the Lincoln campus through 2026.

The group raised $10,960 selling T-shirts after an alleged sexual assault at the Nebraska-Lincoln campus in August. Officer Erin Spilker said someone claiming to be a member of the advocacy group Voices of Hope emailed the shop where the T-shirts were printed. The money was then wired to an account mentioned in the email.

Six state senators are asking for more transparency into the sexual assault investigation at a University of Nebraska-Lincoln fraternity house. The group of lawmakers expressed their concern of repeated safety issues at the university in a letter to Chancellor Ronnie Green. The senators warned that University leadership has lost the trust of many students on campus and asked the chancellor to support increased accountability in UNL's Title Nine office. Protesters have gathered this week in front of the university's Phi Gamma Delta house, where the alleged sexual assault took place.
