SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — Forecasters say a wintry storm system could drop up to 10 inches (25.4 centimeters) of snow on northwest Nebraska later this week.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the northern half of the Panhandle. The service says ice could form on wet pavement late Wednesday night or early Thursday as the system arrives, followed by snow and winds gusting to 35 mph (56.3 kph). Travel could be extremely hazardous.

Overnight low temperatures could dip below 20 degrees (minus 6.7 Celsius).

Only weeks after reopening in the wake of historic flooding along the Missouri River in March, Interstate 29 on and off ramps for Highway 2 in southwest Iowa have again closed due to flooding.

Highway 2 connects southwest Iowa to Nebraska City, Nebraska, over the Missouri River. The Omaha World-Herald reports that as of Saturday morning, floodwater was covering the ramps to the highway from I-29.

(Scottsbluff, NE)  --  Snow removal efforts are continuing across the panhandle following last week's blizzard.  Scotts Bluff County public works officials announced yesterday that crews had cleared all routes to give rural residents access to and from their properties.  Officials say some roads were covered by 10-to-12-foot snow drifts following the storm.  Snow removal efforts in Scotts Bluff County cost an estimated 50-thousand-dollars in employee overtime and fuel for vehicles.

(Omaha, NE)  --  Flooding is impacting eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.  Deputies encouraged residents in southwestern Sarpy County to evacuate after water overtopped a levee near Capehart Road yesterday.  All 26-hundred residents of Missouri Valley, Iowa were ordered to evacuate yesterday after multiple levee breaks were reported.  The state patrol says two people were rescued from a vehicle that got caught in floodwaters near Pierce yesterday, and residents along the Platte River between Ashland and Gretna were asked to evacuate last night.

(Omaha, NE)  --  A polar vortex is causing dangerous wind chills in Nebraska.  A Wind Chill Warning is in effect for eastern Nebraska including Omaha until noon, and a Wind Chill Advisory will be in effect from today at noon until 9:00 tomorrow morning.  Wind chills in the impacted area could reach 40-degrees-below-zero.  Officials are warning that exposure to the cold temperatures could lead to frostbite and hypothermia within minutes.
