Omaha Public Schools Superintendent John Mackiel will stay on the job for two more months.

A news release from OPS says the school board and longtime Superintendent Mackiel have agreed to amend his contract. He’ll remain as Superintendent through August 31st.

Mackiel’s been with OPS for four decades. He planned to retire at the end of June, and former Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Nancy Sebring was hired to take over July first. But Sebring resigned Saturday after reports that she used her Des Moines Public Schools account to send and receive sexually explicit emails.

The OPS board voted unanimously Monday night to conduct another national search for a new Superintendent. An interim Superintendent will be appointed to serve after Mackiel’s retirement until a new school district leader is named.
