Books by the Busload Promotes Literacy

Metropolitan Community College, Cargo Zone LLC and Metro Transit are bringing 20,000 free new books to locations throughout the greater Omaha community.

Metro Community College spokeswoman Sheila O’Connor says the Books by the Busloadprogram has been running since 2011.

It’s meant to promote literacy among adults and families.

She says the organizations want the books to get into the hands and homes of children, youth and adults who are interested in reading.

"So much of the studies show getting children involved with reading and comprehension at a young age, gives them a strong foothold for education and literacy as they grow up.”

O’Connor says Books by the Busload will stop at the Westroads Mall by the bus hub, the Salvation Army Kroc Center in South Omaha, and Heartland Workforce Solutions in North Omaha this Saturday and Sunday from 10 until 4.
