Light it Up Program seeks to improve security

By Katie Knapp

Omaha, NE – North Omaha residents have the opportunity to take part in a program designed to improve neighborhood security. The Light it Up program is a partnership of OPPD and the weed and seed areas in Northwest and Northeast Omaha. Residents can apply through their weed and seed coordinator. If the application is approved, OPPD will place a security light on the nearest utility pole.

Weed and seed will pay half the cost of the new security light the first year, with residents picking up the remainder of the cost. After the first year, residents will pay the entire cost of the security light.

Mayor Mike Fahey announced the Light it Up program Thursday. Mayor Fahey says the goal is to deter crime.
