United Way begins its 2009 campaign

Omaha, NE – The United Way of the Midlands hopes to raise $21 million during its 2009 campaign.

United Way partners with 52 agencies and supports 154 programs. That includes the 211 line, which connects callers with social service agencies. Kathy O'Hara, spokeswoman for United Way of the Midlands, says calls to the 211 line were up 20% in August.

O'Hara says economic troubles have more people seeking services from the United Way and its partner agencies. She says the programs meet both urgent and long-term needs.

The 2009 campaign runs through early November.
