Omaha, NE – Author Sarah McFarland Taylor was the featured speaker at Creighton University's annual Women and Religion Lecture last Thursday. Taylor's presentation was titled "Green Sisters: Women Religious, Earth Justice and Spiritual Ecology."
Taylor, an associate professor of religious studies at Northwestern, says the "green sisters" are environmentally committed Roman Catholic vowed religious sisters and nuns. She says, in many cases, these women have spent decades working with the poor and have now come to see the causes of hunger, violence and economic injustice as inextricably tied to environmental degradation
She says these "green sisters" are responding to the call of the earth in a variety ways, including sod busting their lawns to create community supported organic gardens, building alternative housing structures from renewable materials instead of forest products and creating wildlife sanctuaries on their properties
The lecture was sponsored by the Kripke Center for the Study of Religion and Society and the Women and Gender Studies Program at Creighton University.
