Presidential candidates have been sounding off about millionaires on food stamps, but the reality is harsher. Even in high-income zip codes, the formerly well off are having to turn to food stamps to put food on the table. That's according to two new surveys of food insecurity and income.

DOJ Probe Finds Ariz. Sheriff Violated Civil Rights
In Arizona, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is lashing out at the Justice Department after Thursday's scathing report accusing him of civil rights violations. According to investigators, Arpaio's office routinely discriminated against Latinos and retaliated against its critics, in violation of both the Constitution and the Civil Rights Act.

Anonymous Donors Pay Off Kmart Layaway Accounts
At Kmart stores across the country, anonymous donors are walking in and paying off the layaway accounts of strangers. This seems to have started in Michigan, but the holiday spirit is spreading. Kmart says the stealth benefactors usually ask for accounts that include toys.

As they drove off after stealing DVDs and video games from Target, one thief pocket dialed 911. A dispatcher listened as the duo detailed their heist, including how the police would be looking for their Blue Dodge Durango. That tip led the cops straight to them.
