Omaha Police Chief Alex Hayes is retiring from the department.

A news release from Mayor Jim Suttle’s office says Hayes will retire March 30th. He’s been with the Omaha Police Department for 25 years, the last two-and-a-half as Police Chief. Hayes took over following former Chief Eric Buske’s departure in 2009.

In a statement, Hayes says “my decision was to retire at this time was personal and was not an easy decision to make.” Mayor Suttle praised Hayes for his work in finding efficiencies within the Police Department and embracing new technology such as the ShotSpotter system.

The Mayor will appoint an interim Police Chief before the 30th.
