Almost two-thirds of people injured or killed in a crash involving a teen driver are people other than the teen behind the wheel.
That’s the major finding in a new study released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.
Rose White, AAA Nebraska spokeswoman, says the foundation researched two decades of crash data involving teens ages 15-19.
White says in 2013, more than 370,000 people were injured and more than 2,900 were killed in crashes that involved a teenage driver.
She says teens are driving more in the summer because they are out of school so it’s important to keep an eye out for them.
"As the other driver, when you’re in traffic, you might notice the driver might be a young person with little experience. If that’s the case, just be aware that you may need to give them an extra margin of safety. Or if you have friends or family members with teens, we ask you refer those parents or the teen to our website to give them the free resources and tools that they need.”
White says resources to help parents coach their teens through the driving process are available at TeenDriving.AAA.com.
