Sen. Fischer travels to Middle East

U.S. Senator Deb Fischer says members of the Armed Services Committee had “blunt, honest conversations” during a recent mission to the Middle East.

Fischer was one of several Senators who traveled to Jordan, Turkey, and Afghanistan last week. While there, Fischer visited a Syrian refugee camp in Turkey. She said while the camp was well-organized and appeared safe, the living conditions were poor.

"We saw dozens of people that were sharing tents, they were sleeping on very, very thin mattresses just on the ground, they were cooking on a hot plate, of course sharing their bathroom facilities, so while it was better than I expected, it was still not a good situation for people."

The group also met with leaders in Jordan, where Fischer says discussions focused on American leadership, before spending July fourth with troops in Afghanistan.

Fischer’s comments came Wednesday during her weekly call with Nebraska media.
