Nebraska officials promise review of deadly prison revolt

State officials are promising to investigate a weekend prison revolt at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution that left two inmates dead.

The prison remained on lockdown Tuesday, and Director of Correctional Services Scott Frakes says the situation was under control. Four prisoners were injured and four staff members were assaulted during the disturbance, which began at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Frakes says 128 inmates are in temporary housing while damage is assessed and repaired.

"There is damage to camera systems, the tentative estimate there was around the $25,000 to $30,000 range. There’s damage to sprinkler heads, and then the fire system needs to be recharged after that’s addressed."

Frakes says it's not yet clear whether the facility has enough staff for the more than 1,000 inmates it houses.

Tecumseh State Correctional Institution is a maximum-security facility. It houses Nebraska’s death row inmates.
