Hot weather settling in to Omaha area

By Katie Knapp

Omaha, NE – Hot weather is settling in to the Omaha area. Temperatures the rest of this week are forecast to be at or above 90 degrees.

The Douglas County Health Department says you should avoid outdoor activities during hot weather if at all possible. If you must be outside, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. You should also limit outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours.

Health Department Resource Specialist Phil Rooney says infants, young children, people over 65, and those with physical or mental illnesses are most susceptible to the heat.

He says when the weather is hot, there are some things you shouldn't do. Don't over-exert yourself outdoors, avoid drinks with sugar, alcohol or caffeine, and limit exercise. Rooney says no one should be left alone in a car during hot weather.

The Salvation Army has opened cooling centers at its North and South Omaha locations. They're also seeking donations for their summer fan program.
