Omaha's 2010 budget deficit now $4.7 million

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – Omaha's projected 2010 budget deficit is no longer $12.3 million dollars, according to city officials.

A news release from Mayor Jim Suttle's office says an increase in sales tax revenue in May and June reduced the budget deficit to $4.7 million dollars. Sales tax receipts were up 32 percent in May and 7.3 percent in June.

The Mayor's office also credits cost savings in the Police and Fire Departments for reducing the deficit. Both departments have smaller personnel counts due to attrition.

Omaha's projected 2011 deficit is $34 million dollars. A vote on the 2011 budget is scheduled for next week.
