A nearly 40-year research project in Iowa has wrapped up. The state Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship says the last of 300 ag drainage wells has been closed in the Hawkeye State. The agency has been researching their impacts since passage of the Iowa Groundwater Protection Act in 1987. It has found negative impacts to water quality, including releasing high levels of nitrates.
