Annexation package adds 8,700 to Omaha population

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha will gain more than 8,700 residents in newly annexed parts of the state's biggest city.

The Omaha World-Herald reports that the City Council adopted Mayor Jean Stothert's proposed annexation package Tuesday except for Miracle Hill Golf Course. Council members Brinker Harding and Aimee Melton wanted it left outside city limits so the area can be redeveloped by forming a sanitary improvement district — an option not allowed if the area were swallowed up by Omaha.

Stothert's office says the overwhelming majority of property owners in her annexation package now will have lower property tax bills. The office says only 12 residential properties of nearly 4,000 newly annexed properties will have higher tax bills.

The July 2017 U.S. Census estimate of Omaha's population was nearly 467,000 people.
