Preliminary hearing set for Dr. Anthony J. Garcia

A man charged in connection with two double homicides in Omaha is scheduled back in court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.

Dr. Anthony Joseph Garcia is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony. He’s accused of killing Dr. Roger Brumback and his wife, Mary, at their west Omaha home last May, as well as 11-year-old Thomas Hunter and his family’s housekeeper, Shirlee Sherman, in 2008 in Dundee.

Garcia is currently being held in the Douglas County Department of Corrections without bond. During his first appearance in Douglas County court last month, Garcia’s lawyers argued that evidence in an affidavit was “circumstantial and thinly veiled.” He was arrested last month in Illinois.

Garcia was a pathology resident at Creighton from 2000 to 2001. He was fired by Drs. Brumback and William Hunter, the father of Thomas Hunter, for what investigators say was “erratic behavior.”
