"The Nutcracker" opens this weekend

Ballet Nebraska presents “The Nutcracker” this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Arts Center at Iowa Western.

Erika Overturff, Artistic Director for Ballet Nebraska, has performed the ballet many times but what keeps it fresh for her is seeing it through the eyes of the students who are involved in the performances.

She says for many of them, it’s their first production.

This year, Overturff choreographed a new Spanish scene for Act II.  She says the music in that piece is lively and the dancers are doing a great job with it.

"There’s a lot of exciting dancing.  In Act II there are many different variations, sort of representative of a number of different countries.  And so you see classical dancing but in a variety of styles so it’s pretty fast-paced in that way and entertaining.”

Overturff says her favorite section of “The Nutcracker” is the snow scene with its dancing snowflakes and magical snowfall.

“The Nutcracker” opens this Sunday at the Arts Center at Iowa Western.  Ballet Nebraska also presents “The Nutcracker” at the Orpheum Theatre on Saturday, December 3rd at 2 and 7:30 and Sunday, December 4th at 2.

Ticket information is available at BalletNebraska.org.
