Two NCHS Programs Offered In North Omaha Receive United Way of the Midlands Grant

Two Nebraska Children’s Home Society programs -- Raising Your Grandchildren and Pathways to the Future – a program for young parents -- recently received a nearly $109,000 grant from the United Way of the Midlands.

Both programs are offered at their Children and Families Center in North Omaha.

Lana Temple-Plotz, CEO of Nebraska Children’s Home Society, says Raising Your Grandchildren can help grandparents in a number of ways – including with financial and legal issues.

“So they don’t often have the necessary things for kids that they might need and also don’t know what the resources might be. And they also aren’t familiar with the latest technology around texting and phones, and that sort of thing. So, they come to us just concerned about being able to raise their grandchildren, and we help them get back on track. We do an educational group for them and also a support group – an opportunity for grandchildren to come together.”

Sunday September 10th is National Grandparents Day.  According to Census.gov, in 2015 there were 2.6 million grandparents raising one or more of their grandchildren. About 500,000 of them were doing so with incomes below the federal poverty level.
