Nebraska association board OKs gender participation policy

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The leadership of a statewide association that sets policies for high school extracurricular activities and sports in Nebraska has adopted a gender participation policy.

The Nebraska School Activities Association board of directors Thursday approved the policy on a 6-2 vote. The policy requires a student to show he or she has undergone hormone therapy or gender reassignment surgery before being allowed to participate in a sport that's inconsistent with the student's gender at birth.

A committee that would include a physician experienced in transgender health care would rule on the eligibility and a medical professional would have to verity the student's "consistent gender identification and expression."

The association's general assembly meets in August and could override the board's decision.
