Metro offering a new certificate focused on immigration laws and procedures

Metropolitan Community College is offering a new career certificate focused on immigration laws and procedures.

Andrew Sagartz, Business Law and Paralegal Instructor at Metro, says there are all types of people who could use assistance with immigration.

Most of these are in the underprivileged category, including domestic violence victims, asylum seekers and children who were brought to the US by their parents when they were young.

Sagartz says the certification will appeal to three main audiences: attorneys and their staff, non-attorneys who wish to work with immigrant clients as accredited representatives and those who want to develop an understanding in immigration law including law enforcement personnel.

"This is an area of law that’s under constant change and it’s also a very complex area.  So the certificate program is meant to keep our fingers on the pulse of what’s happening in immigration law while giving that underpinning of training about immigration law.  There are some things that haven’t changed a whole lot in the last 50 years but there are some things that are under change every day.”

Sagartz says the course consists of six online classes and is meant to be both convenient and affordable for those who are interested.  To earn the certificate, students must complete a total of 25.5 credit hours.
