Creighton students attending papal mass in Philadelphia

A group of 50 students and six Creighton University staff will attend Pope Francis’ mass in Philadelphia on Sunday.

Creighton’s Campus Ministry began organizing the trip to Philadelphia over the summer. The group will leave Friday for what it’s calling a “pilgrimage” to attend the Pope’s mass Sunday afternoon.

Kyle Lierk, Creighton’s Director of Campus Ministry, says it’s inspirational to be part of a global event, and exciting to be in the presence of Pope Francis.

Lierk says St. Joseph’s University is hosting the group, and others from around the U.S, for the event. He says the trip to Philadelphia is an opportunity for reflection.

“I’m just hoping that he will continue to do what he’s been doing since he’s been a priest, but especially as a Pope, where I think he’s really trying to speak truth that can sometimes be really hard for us to hear, can sometimes be challenging.”

The group will return to Omaha Monday.

Pope Francis will address a joint session of Congress Thursday morning, and meet with the United Nations General Assembly on Friday.
