Part of Fairmount Park reopens in Council Bluffs

Work on phase one of Council Bluffs’ Fairmount Park is nearly complete.

The East Point of Fairmount Park opened to the public on Saturday. It includes a water playground, which Council Bluffs Parks Director Larry Foster says will remain open this week. Foster says all of the underbrush and invasive species in the 25 acre portion of the park were removed, leaving the natural conditions.

Phase one also includes 1,200 feet of trails, which should be complete this fall. The total cost of phase one is $1 million.

Foster says an announcement on phase two of the project, called Return to Fairmount Park, will be made soon.

The historic park once was home to a trolley stop, an ice skating rink, and a greenhouse.
