If you’re planning some remodeling, you might want to check out the free items at Under the Sink’s recycle shop, the Re-Store.
Wayne Beal, Under the Sink Supervisor, says everything received at Under the Sink -- Douglas and Sarpy County’s household hazardous waste disposal site -- is weighed, sorted by chemical-hazard class and prepared for recycling. Reusable items are offered for free at the Re-Store.
”We have both kinds of paint, we have latex paint as well as the oil based or solvent-based paint. There stains, there’s varnishes, adhesives – household-type adhesives -- construction adhesives, wall-paneling adhesives; wallpaper paste, wallpaper removers, household cleaning products, drain openers, that type of thing.”
Beal says the highest volume product they receive is latex paint. He says although not actually a hazardous material, latex paint can only be put out with curbside trash if it is completely dried up and the lid is off the can.
You have to sign a liability waiver to take something from the Re-Store, and there’s a 50-pound-per-person-per-day limit for everything except latex paint. Located at 4001 S. 120th Street, the Re-Store’s hours are Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 4:45, Thursday from 9 to 6:15 and Saturday mornings by appointment only.
