A resolution in the Nebraska Legislature calls on Congress to pass federal immigration reform this year.
The Nebraska Coalition for Immigration Reform joined five lawmakers at the State Capitol Wednesday to discuss LR 399. The resolution calls current immigration laws outdated, saying that hurts the state’s families and businesses.
Senator Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha calls the current system broken.
"The current system tears families and communities apart, forces millions of people to live in the shadows, pits workers against each other, puts honest and respectable businesses at a disadvantage, and leaves billions of tax dollars on the table. In my time as a state legislator, I’ve witnessed firsthand the damage that our broken system has done to families in my community and our state."
The resolution says immigration has helped Nebraska maintain its population, and “the state of Nebraska has legitimate interests in the passage of immigration laws at the federal level.”
If it passes, Nebraska would join more than 30 other states that have passed similar resolutions.
