Election Results Yield Few Surprises

Paul Landow, a professor in the Political Science department at UNO, says there were no surprises in the Senate race.

He says Ben Sasse had been ahead for the last several weeks and was expected to win.

Sasse won despite that fact that opponent Sid Dinsdale had infused $1 million of his own money into his campaign.

Landow says the Governor’s race on the other hand was surprising because Jon Bruning entered the race as the clear favorite.

"He was easily the person to beat simply because of name recognition and his past years of public service. But Pete Ricketts moved up gradually over the last month, month and a half and in the end, overtook Mr. Bruning by just a few votes.  It was an exciting race and a mild surprise I think you would have to say.”

Landow says the Democrats definitely face an uphill battle in November.

He says it’s an off year with no presidential candidate to tag onto.

He says though Nebraska voter registration favors Republicans by a large margin, it’s not impossible for the Democrats to win in the Senate or Gubernatorial races.

Landow says the races will be spirited and interesting to watch.
