Nebraska primary voter turnout at highest level since 2000

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska officials say voter turnout in Tuesday's election was the highest for a presidential primary since 2000.

Secretary of State John Gale said Wednesday that 26.5 percent of registered voters participated in the election. Turnout in 2000 reached 30.1 percent.

Gale had predicted average turnout because the GOP presidential race was no longer contested, but races for Legislature, Congress, natural resources districts and other offices were not yet decided.

McPherson County had the highest turnout, with 60 percent of its registered voters casting ballots. Douglas County had the lowest showing, at just above 20 percent.

Of the 1,165,371 registered voters in Nebraska, 309,079 cast ballots. The newest numbers are unofficial because provisional ballots and some early voting ballots have yet to be counted.
