Kwanzaa Celebration Starts Next Week

By Cheril Lee

Omaha, NE – A weeklong Kwanzaa celebration begins Monday at the Charles B. Washington library.

Branch Manager Joanne Ferguson Cavanaugh says the week kicks off with a blues harmonica performance from 2:00 t0 4:00 on Monday afternoon. Cavanaugh says the first 30 kids who attend will receive free harmonicas. She says the week's events continue with make and take art projects, African drumming, and traditional food. Cavanaugh says the Washington branch has celebrated Kwanzaa for more than a decade. She says, "Kwanzaa is a time for the community to reflect on the positive things the African-American and Pan-African community have contributed and their accomplishments."

All Kwanzaa events are free and open to the public. A complete schedule is available online at omahalibrary.com. The Charles B. Washington branch is located at 2868 Ames Avenue.
