Trans Stitchin’ is a new, free community closet created to provide Omaha’s transgender community with an essential service: gender-affirming clothing. Patrons can either come during normal business hours or schedule an appointment to browse a closet bursting at the seams with donated items. It’s the passion project of friends Grady Schmitt and Maddelyn Bal. The founders joined Omaha Public Radio’s Courtney Bierman to talk about Trans Stitchin’s origins and mission.
Shmitt and Bal have also begun the process of achieving nonprofit status for Trans Stitchin'. They launched a GoFundMe to cover the legal fees.
Trans Stitchin’ is located at 7701 Pacific Street and is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or by appointment. The best way to get in touch, Shmitt and Bal say, is to send a message to their Facebook page.
