The news that trumpeter Wallace Roney had passed away in March, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19 left me with a deep sadness. Roney seemed to have many years of productive output ahead of him, he was a prolific recording and performance artist who had an open mind to moving jazz music ahead into the future. I had interviewed him twice and the second interview was arguably the finest of the conversations.
He was initially well known as the hand-picked protege of Miles Davis. Later he built upon that foundation with a series of stimulating, rich & bold recordings as a bandleader that did not disappoint.
From the archives, an interview that I did with Wallace Roney after the release of his recording No Room For Argument. Interview engineer: Mike Hansen. During his long tenure at KIOS-FM Hansen engineered dozens of interviews I have conducted at the station.
