Senate Democrats seek special session after budget vetoes

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Senate Democrats have joined House Democrats in calling for Iowa lawmakers to return to the Capitol for a special session to respond to Gov. Terry Branstad's recent budget vetoes.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, of Council Bluffs, says Tuesday there are plans to issue a formal letter to all 50 senators. Democrats in the House issued similar plans Monday.

Josie Albrecht, a spokeswoman for House Republicans, said Monday that lawmakers don't believe there is enough support for a special session.

Branstad approved nearly $7.2 billion in ongoing general fund expenses for the current fiscal year. Earlier this month he vetoed much of a one-time spending bill backed by the legislature, which included nearly $56 million for K-12 education.

Branstad says he opposes one-time spending for ongoing expenses.
