Vanderbilt beats Virginia in first game of CWS finals rematch

Greg Echlin

The scenario at the College World Series is the same as it was a year ago: Vanderbilt beat Virginia inGame One of the title series. It’s up to the Virginia Cavaliers to bounce back, which they did a year ago.

It would also please the legion of fans in Omaha who are pulling for Council Bluffs native and Creighton alum Brian O’Connor, the head coach of the Cavaliers. Mandi Cabral grew up in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and now lives in Omaha. She remembers the bitter end a year ago.

“Actually, I went to the championship game alone and cried myself back to the car when they lost, so we’re coming for it this year.”

Victories the next two nights would lock up Virginia’s first national title and Cabral made a promise to herself if the Cavaliers pull it off.

“My first tattoo ever. I will get a Cavs tattoo.”

The Cavs had their backs to the wall last Saturday against Florida, but survived in a 5-4 victory to reach the title series against Vandy.
