Veteran drummer and bandleader Peter Erskine and the Dr. Um Band return with a 2 CD set of studio and live music to enjoy. If you have listened to the previous Dr. Um Band recordings you will find more good music to savor. Erskine creates a similar groove with band members John Beasley on keyboards, Bob Sheppard on saxophones and Benjamin Shepherd on bass. First, in a recording of a recent studio session before an appreciative audience the band sets a solid groove with numbers such as "For The Time Being" and "Might As Well Be". The second disc, recorded live while on tour in Italy, sees the band on fire with spirited performances including "Eleven Eleven" and "Northern Cross".
On Call is the third in a series from Erskine and his Dr. Um Band that have presented selections fueled by the classic fusion sound of bands such as such as Weather Report (where Erskine was a drummer for several years), among many other well-known jazz artists that Erskine has performed with over several decades.
Peter Erskine is one of the foremost jazz drummers of our time. With 700 albums and film scores to his credit he's worked with many of the most widely acclaimed jazz bands of the genre including Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, and the Bob Mintzer Big Band, in addition to Weather Report and the Jaco Pastorius Word of Mouth Big Band. As a first call sideman Erskine has worked with Diana Krall, Eliane Elias, Linda Ronstadt, as well as Joe Farrell and Gary Burton. He's also a professor at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California and has written several books about drumming.
