Last Call Review: Beat Funktion/Olympus/Do Records

The fifth album from the Swedish six-piece groove machine Beat Funktion is Olympus, also the band's new full length concept album. On the disc, the band obtains inspiration from Greek mythology. Perhaps you are wondering, how can Greek mythology be groovy?

Well, if it has a festive night with Beat Funktion--a band that has been internationally successful for years with their danceable combination of instrumental 1970's disco, melodic funk, jazz improvisation, pop, rock. reggae and psychedelia. The results on this new recording are 15 tracks that have a solid groove to them. "Game of the Gods", announces the intentions on the disc, which includes groovy explorations of songs entitled "Viper Lady", "The Hydra" "Mount Olympus" and the standout track "Where's The Sunshine", which is a retro-1970s dance floor delight.

Beat Funktion is: Karl Olandersson, trumpet; Olle Thunstrom, tenor saxophone, Johan Oijen, electric guitar; Daniel Lantz, keyboards; Pal Johnson, bass; Jon Eriksson, drums with guest vocalist Rebecca Laakso on "Where's The Sunshine", and other special guests elsewhere on the recording.

Another thoroughly satisfying release from a band that delivers the groove, every time. Previous Beat Funktion recordings include Mandy's Secret, Voodooland, Moontown and The Plunge

Chris Cooke has been a voice on radio in Omaha since 1988. While at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, he studied radio broadcasting, history and religion. Working at KVNO-FM, Cooke hosted a weekend adventuresome jazz show on the station in addition to duties as an on-air announcer on overnights, weekends and holidays. He also worked at KBLZ (the then student-run radio station) as well as KYNE-TV, and The Gateway as a reporter.
In November 1992, Cooke signed on at KIOS-FM and has been there ever since. He has hosted the Tuesday and Thursday editions of Jazz in the Afternoon since 1996 and has also hosted Last Call since that year. A long time fan of jazz music, Cooke enjoys talking with the musicians who make jazz music. He has interviewed Horace Silver, Roy Haynes, Wayne Shorter, David Liebman, Airto Moreira, Jessica Williams and Karrin Allyson, to name a few. While not at the station Cooke maintains a web design consultancy business that has served a number of non-profit and music clients for over 20 years.
