OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — People who live just outside Omaha city limits won't be voting in municipal elections.
The City Council on Tuesday unanimously voted to uphold Mayor Jean Stothert's veto of a measure seeking to give people living just outside Omaha city limits the right to vote in municipal elections.
The resolution has sparked debate between those who said giving people who don't pay city taxes a vote is unconstitutional, and those who said residents living in a 3-mile zone outside city limits are often subjected to city laws and regulations and should therefore get a vote.
Last week the council voted 4-3 for a resolution to lobby the Nebraska Legislature next year to pass a bill that would allow the change.
