Omaha Mayor proposes 45 percent increase in sewer use fees

Omahans could see a substantial increase in their sewer bills.

Mayor Jean Stothert on Thursday introduced a proposal that could raise the average residential customer’s bill each year through 2018. Right now, the average bill is $35.26 a month. In four years, that same customer could pay more than 51 dollars a month. After 2018, rates are anticipated to increase 9 percent each year.

The additional sewer use fees will go toward the cost of the $2 billion sewer separation project. The city of Omaha is three years in to construction on the CSO project, with completion scheduled for 2027.

The rate increase proposal goes to the Omaha City Council on Tuesday, with a public hearing and vote on July 15th.
