American doctor with Ebola stable, alert and talkative

NMC officials say a Massachusetts doctor with Ebola is stable and showing signs of improvement.

Dr. Rick Sacra arrived in Omaha Friday. He's being treated in the hospital's biocontainment unit with supportive care, including an IV, fluids, food, and medication. Dr. Angela Hewlett said at a news conference Sunday that Dr. Sacra is still very ill, but is more alert and talkative.

Dr. Phil Smith, the director of NMC's biocontainment unit, says doctors are encouraged by what they've seen so far. But he says Dr. Sacra isn't out of the woods, because the Ebola virus can have phases.

A team of 35 doctors is treating Dr. Sacra in the hospital's secure biocontainment unit. Sacra's wife, Debbie, arrived in Omaha Saturday. She's spoken with Sacra via video conference.

Sacra tested positive for Ebola last Monday while working in the obstetrics unit of a hospital in Liberia.
