Omaha, NE – The 17-year-old who shot two administrators at Millard South High School used a police service weapon and fired seven shots.
Omaha Police released further details Thursday on the shooting that killed Assistant Principal Vicki Kaspar and injured Principal Curtis Case. Police Chief Alex Hayes says Robert Butler Junior was called in to Kaspar's office Wednesday morning, suspended after a New Year's Day incident, and sent home. During that time, Butler Jr., the son of an Omaha Police detective, accessed his father's service weapon when Robert Butler Senior left their home.
The younger Butler then went to the high school and shot Kaspar and Case in the school's office. After shooting them, Butler fired at a custodian. That bullet hit a wall and debris injured the school's nurse. No other staff or students were hurt.
Butler Jr. is believed to have acted alone. Chief Hayes says authorities aren't sure at this point if Butler planned the shooting. He says OPD plans to review its policies and procedures on firearm safety. It's unknown if Butler Senior will face disciplinary action.
Millard South High School students return to class Friday. Superintendent Keith Lutz says additional security personnel will be on hand for the next several days.
