Omaha, NE – The College of St. Mary opened a new cadaver lab on campus in January.
Dr. Jeff Keyte, Assistant Professor of Biology, directs the lab. He says administration and faculty all saw the need for a tool that would provide anatomic education for a growing student population with majors in nursing, anatomy and physiology. Dr. Keyte says 90 students are using the lab this semester, "many people think students will be weirded out, nauseous and sick, but I have yet to see that in any of our students. I think by the time they enter the lab, they have learned enough anatomy that they are curious and interested."
Dr. Keyte says these kinds of educational experiences for the students are only possible because people donate their bodies for medical education. He says without that gift, there would be no way for the students to ever fully understand the structure and function of the human body.
