Tax Year 2011 Homestead Exemption Application Filing Season Begins

By Cheril Lee

Omaha, NE – Now through June 30th, the Douglas County Assessor's office is accepting applications for the Homestead Exemption.

Mike Goodwillie, Deputy County Assessor for Douglas County, says the program is designed to provide property tax relief. He says the Douglas County Assessor's Office will provide several application assistance sessions throughout the county during the filing period. Those who attend are asked to bring their income information as well as a list of their medical expenses. Goodwillie says everyone who is eligible for the exemption should apply, "for people over 65, people with certain types of disabilities and disabled veterans and their widows or widowers. And if one is eligible, it will reduce the property tax liability on owner occupied residences in Douglas County."
