B-cycles come to Omaha

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – Omahans have a new option for short trips around the city.

The b-cycle program launched in Omaha June 15th. 35 bicycles are available for check-out at five Omaha b-cycle stations. Right now, the stations are in the Aksarben Village and UNO area. It works like this: you swipe your credit card, or your b-cycle card if you buy a membership, at one of the kiosks. You can then check out a bicycle to ride for a short trip or an entire day.

Live Well Omaha executive director Kerri Peterson says b-cycle is another way Omaha is becoming bicycle-friendly. She says in the past five years, Omaha's miles of bike trails have grown from one to 20. Omaha has a Bicycle-Pedestrian Coordinator and a map of bicycle routes.

Live Well Omaha, Community Bike Project, and Blue Cross Blue Shield partnered on the b-cycle program. Officials hope it'll expand in to other parts of the city.

More information on the b-cycle program is available at omaha.bcycle.com.
