LAST CALL CD OF THE MONTH: Gerry Gibbs & Thrasher People/ Weather or Not/ Whaling City Sound
Drummer Gerry Gibbs and his trio present excellent performances of music from the legendary jazz supergroup Weather Report on a new two-CD set which also features Gibb's own original compositions, and some covers. The result is Weather Or Not--arguably Gibb's best recording to date.
Gibbs is joined by rising piano star Alex Collins and much in demand bassist Hans Glawischnig. The result is a truly satisfying release of 28 tunes with many delights for Weather Report fans and those who enjoy groove-oriented music.
On the first disc, Gibbs and his trio choose to re-imagine the Weather Report sound utilizing familiar numbers from their canon, including “Palladium,” “Teen Town,” “Birdland,” and “Black Market". New musical textures are found in this re-arrangement, which has the personal seal of approval of none other than saxophonist Wayne Shorter.
The second disc presents a potpourri of Gibb's own material, which includes a cover of the theme to the hit 1970's TV show "Kojak" delivered in a funky groove, as is “I’m Simply Waiting,” and “The 70s Song aka Patrice Rushen” Many of these are original songs have never been heard before. And the kaleidoscope of musical gems presented is dazzling.
Gerry Gibbs said of the record, “Instead of creating one musical concept, I wanted it to sound like 16 trios, so that’s why the music was so eclectic.” And so it is. A fun house of music that will draw the listener in for repeated visits.
Gerry Gibbs is a Grammy nominated drummer, producer, band leader, composer & arranger. He's the son of the acclaimed jazz vibraphonist Terry Gibbs. And despite being the son of an acclaimed jazz musician, Gerry has without doubt made his own name as a bandleader on nine jazz recordings, recently with his Thraser Dream Trio that featured National Endowment for the Arts Masters Kenny Barron (piano) and Ron Carter(bass) for three very satisfactory recordings.
This in itself would be an accomplishment for any musician, but Gibbs has a wide variety of career highlights. Gibbs also leads his Thraser Big Band and Electric Thraser Orchestra. The release, Play the Music of Miles Davis 1967-1975 (2010), saw Gibbs with 13 of Los Angeles top musicians in a rich and bold interpretation of the legendary trumpeter's jazz-rock compositions. And in 2000 Gerry Gibbs and the Third Trio From The Sun released First Visit, which featured legendary jazz saxophonist Arthur Blythe.
Additionally, Gerry Gibbs has performed, recorded and toured with some of the biggest names in Jazz history including Stanley Clarke, Alice Coltrane, Cassandra Wilson, Clark Terry, Wynton Marsalis, Gary Bartz, Billy Childs, Mike Stern, and many more.
Gerry Gibbs has consistently created compelling albums & and this new release is highly recommended. Liner notes including praise from Weather Report drummer Peter Erskine are enclosed, in addition to words of praise from Weather Report saxophonist and jazz legend Wayne Shorter.
