Erik Jekabson, an accomplished trumpeter, composer and music educator from the San Francisco Bay Area, performs with assurance on an exciting new Wide Hive records release.
The second album from Erik Jekabson's "Sextet" features saxophonist Dave Ellis, guitarist Dave MacNab, bassist John Wiitala, drummer Hamir Atwal and legendary percussionist John Santos along with trumpeter Jekabson.
This satisfying date begins with the dynamic “San Paolo Avenue”. The band cooks on a date of expansive original tunes by the trumpeter, including the mysterious “Cat and Mouse”, the latinesque vibe of “Medjool” and the solid groove of “Hive Wive”, a play on the label’s name. The energy and adventuresome nature of the band recall the recordings of Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw back in the 1970s.
West Coast record label Wide Hive has released a series of satisfying discs in recent years. Erik Jekabson’s latest recording is the finest yet from the label and has a lot of engaging music to enjoy.
