OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Officials say the city of Omaha must pay a nearly $240,000 medical bill for a man accused of shooting a police officer.
Authorities say 36-year-old John Ezell Jr. was shot several times by other officers after Ezell wounded another officer, Ken Fortune, who's since recovered.
The Omaha World-Herald reports that assistant city attorney Jeff Bloom says the city is constitutionally required to provide medical treatment to people who need it while in police custody.
Police say Ezell was a passenger in a car that police stopped on Sept. 11 and shot Fortune when he approached. Police say Ezell shot at other officers before he was shot several times.
He's pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, assault on an officer and other charges. Court records don't list a trial date.
